2024 William C. Hine Distinguished Service Awardee: Jennifer Gettings

Congratulations to Jennifer Gettings – recipient of the 2024 William C. Hine Distinguished Service Award!

Jennifer is a higher education professional with over two decades of experience in working closely with adult, non-traditional students at Loyola University Chicago. Currently serving as the Assistant Dean in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies, Jennifer oversees student services and engagement, working with her team to create a supportive and relationship-based experience for their students. Her focus has always been on helping students pursue their academic and professional goals, connecting them with the necessary resources and support to achieve success. Her career has featured a number of front facing roles where she has had the privilege of working with students to overcome barriers in returning to school. She started as an Administrative Assistant and had no prior experience working with the adult student population or within higher education. It was during this time that she developed a love for working with adult students and found this work so rewarding that she has chosen to continue to work with this population of students through my various roles at the university.

In Jennifer’s own words,

I have always found immense joy in seeing students progress through their classes, witnessing them grow in their confidence academically, establishing meaningful relationships with fellow students, and demonstrating a deep interest in connecting their growing knowledge with meaningful service to humanity. It is especially fulfilling to share in the joy and sense of achievement that accompanies reaching the important milestone of graduation with the students, who bring unique perspectives and life experiences to their educational journey.”

Since becoming Assistant Dean in 2019, Jennifer has been serving as the Chapter Councilor for the Theta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda at Loyola. During this time, she worked with our ASL members to serve as ambassadors to our prospective and admitted student population. These students and alumni create an open, inclusive environment, sharing their stories, allowing new and prospective students to see themselves as students at the school and university. Jennifer has also introduced the inclusion of ASL members at our new student orientation. Introducing new students to ASL and the ways that we recognize academic achievement, understanding the challenges our students face in balancing their academics with life’s other responsibilities.

Jennifer says, “I welcome the opportunity to play a role in Alpha Sigma Lambda leadership and to cultivate meaningful relationships with my fellow colleagues who are dedicated to serving adult students. Being an integral part of the decisions that will shape the future of our society is a responsibility I embrace with enthusiasm. I wholeheartedly believe in the importance of recognizing the hard work and academic achievements of our non-traditional students, who often make significant sacrifices and overcome formidable hurdles. Their inspiring stories, marked by strength and unwavering persistence, fuel my passion for working with and in support of this resilient student population. Together, we represent a community of dedicated professionals committed to championing the cause of non-traditional students and providing them with the opportunities they deserve.

Congratulations again Jennifer on your achievements!
