Today, we’re happy to highlight Janice Smith – a recipient of the 2023-2024 Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship Award!
In her own words, Janice’s story is a testament to the power of being a lifelong learner:
“I received my high school diploma in 1994 and put college on hold while I raised a family and remained in the workforce…
I found career success to be incredibly challenging without a college degree and decided in 2018 to begin my journey to a higher education. I started this adventure through the Parents Lead program at Frederick Community College where I earned my Associates Degree in Business Administration in December of 2020, Summa Cum Laude. I received awards for my dedication including Dean’s List, Phi Kappa Phi honor society membership, and a Leadership award. I also received several scholarships from the FCC Scholarship Foundation and the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
I continued my educational endeavors at the University of Maryland Global Campus in the Spring of 2021 where I continue to work towards achieving my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resources. I have additionally been awarded membership into Alpha Sigma Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and have received scholarships from our state Senator, local delegates and Alpha Sigma Lambda. I intend to continue pursuing a Masters Degree in Business Administration with UMGC upon completion of my Bachelors degree with a long-term goal of securing a satisfying and fulfilling career opportunity.
Having raised my three children, two boys and one girl, and watching them obtain their own high school diplomas, it is my hope that my hard work and dedication to a higher education will encourage them to strive for their own challenging goals. I have learned that it takes many small steps to reach the top and you must take that first leap to start the journey, no matter how scary. I have also learned that winning each small battle and reaching your goals brings about a self-confidence that is incomparable to any other feeling.“
Congratulations to you, Janice and we’re looking forward to see where your accomplishments take you from here!
