Congratulations to Teklit Michael Fisshaye – a recipient of the 2023-2024 Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship Award! ⁠

Teklit is entering his third year at UMGC, with a major in Cybersecurity Policy and Management and a minor in Business Administration. He also serves as Maryland Delegate for Refugee Congress, an organization led by refugees and former refugees.

Originally from Eritrea, Teklit spent 11 years in Tel Aviv, where he served the Eritrean community as a vocal activist and part of the community leadership through such organizations as the Eritrean Women’s Community Center and the Union of Eritreans Initiative for Social Justice.

After spending over a decade advocating for his rights as an asylum-seeker in Israel, Teklit now resides in Silver Spring, Maryland. After his studies, he plans to pursue social entrepreneurship to create opportunities for economic and social growth for others who have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to war, dictatorship, and persecution.

We’re honored to award Teklit this prestigious scholarship and look forward to seeing the impact he makes in the future.
