It celebrates those who create meaningful opportunities, foster inclusive communities, and inspire others through their service.
We are proud to announce that the 2026 recipient of this prestigious award is Dr. Nilajah Nyasuma Sims from Morgan State University!
About Dr. Nilajah Nyasuma Sims
Dr. Sims has exemplified outstanding leadership and dedication to Alpha Sigma Lambda through her innovative efforts to highlight and support adult learners at Morgan State. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to creating opportunities that showcase the strengths and achievements of non-traditional students.
As a recent example, when students shared that writing personal statements was a barrier to scholarship applications, Dr. Sims collaborated with a faculty partner to lead a focused workshop. This effort resulted in two students being awarded Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarships—the first time the chapter achieved this distinction—paving the way for others to follow.
Beyond scholarship support, Dr. Sims has fostered strong relationships among ASLHS members, faculty, staff, and students. She has hosted events such as the Adult Learner Scholars Gathering, where members connected with the Center for Career Development and received professional headshots, which helped cultivate a culture of belonging and access among students.
In her own words, Dr. Sims stated,
“These efforts ensure that adult learners feel valued, supported, and connected to the wider university community.”
Committed to expanding the quality and visibility of programming, Dr. Sims also partnered with adult students to plan Morgan State’s celebration of National Non-Traditional Student Week. In Summer 2025, she also established the Morgan Adult Learner Association, an organization dedicated to advocacy, engagement, and leadership for non-traditional students, providing a sustainable platform for their voices.
Dr. Sims has consistently prioritized recognition of adult learner achievements through regular gatherings, stakeholder updates that highlight success stories, and inclusive induction ceremonies that celebrate alumni and near-eligible students. Her initiatives continue to strengthen the impact of Morgan State’s chapter and honor the resilience and determination of adult learners everywhere.
