Denley Sweeney -2022-2023 ASLHS Scholarship Award Recipient

Congratulations to Denley Sweeney, a recipient of the 2022-2023 Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship award!

A little about Denley in her words…

“My name is Denley Sweeney and I am currently a Junior at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am 25 and a non-traditional student in the Wings Program at Meredith, which is a really amazing and incredibly progressive program for adult students looking to go to college for all kinds of different reasons.

I am currently getting my BSW and double majoring in both Social Work and Psychology. I am extremely passionate about working with marginalized and at-risk populations, individuals experiencing insecure and/or transitional housing, and substance use matters.

In addition to this, when I get my degree I really hope to work at the macro social work level doing advocacy and policy work. This past year I completed a pretty large research project assessing reproductive mental health needs within “the Triangle” (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill).

I was also in a fellowship with the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina this year where I learned all about how to research, write, and propose policy at local, state, and federal levels.

In this fellowship, I worked with a group to create a policy proposal that would strengthen North Carolina’s current Good Samaritan law (GS-90-96.2).

Outside of school, I stay incredibly busy working at an amazing restaurant in downtown Durham, going on hikes at one of Durham’s many beautiful rivers and parks, going to see Broadway shows, and working my way down my long reading list.”
