Brooks Robinson: 2025-2026 ASLHS Scholarship Award Recipient

Concluding our series to highlight 2025-2026 scholarship recipients, we are proud to feature James Brooks Robinson at SUNY Empire State University, a talented visual artist from Brooklyn and Queens, whose story embodies resilience, self-discovery, and a deep passion for creative expression and community engagement.

Brooks’s journey as an artist has spanned over two decades, during which he has explored a rich and diverse practice that includes oil painting, illustration, comics, and digital art. His work is rooted in a fascination with human experience, emotion, and the ways we find meaning and value in our shared stories.

In 2023, after discovering that he had been living undiagnosed with traits of autism and ADHD, Brooks made a powerful decision to embrace his wiring fully. He chose to pursue an art degree that he had always aspired to, turning a moment of self-awareness into a catalyst for growth and purpose.

Through his studies, Brooks has established a strong foundation and clear direction to continue building a career that feeds into the vibrant cultures of creativity that have always inspired him. His journey exemplifies the importance of understanding oneself, pursuing passions with authenticity, and using art as a means of connection and expression.

Receiving the ASLHS Scholarship is more than a recognition of his artistic talent; it’s a celebration of his perseverance, self-acceptance, and commitment to his craft. Brooks views this support as an affirmation that embracing one’s true self can lead to meaningful impact—both personally and within the broader community of artists and creators.

Brooks is grateful to be part of a community that values authenticity, diversity, and the transformative power of art. His story serves as an inspiring reminder that with courage, self-awareness, and dedication, one person can create work that resonates deeply and enriches our shared cultural landscape.

Please join us in congratulating Brooks on his achievements and his inspiring journey. His dedication to art, self-discovery, and community exemplifies the true spirit of lifelong learning and creative impact.
