As part of our ongoing series to showcase the dedicated leaders within the Alpha Sigma Lambda community, this month we are proud to highlight Melissa Wells, Chapter Councilor at SUNY Empire State University. Melissa exemplifies the core values of leadership, advocacy, and community that define our organization.
When prompted by the question, “What does the role of Chapter Councilor mean to you?” Melissa replied…
“Serving as an ASLHS Chapter Councilor means being deeply connected to the unique journeys of nontraditional learners and having the privilege of celebrating their incredible successes. These students, who often balance full-time jobs, family responsibilities, and other commitments while pursuing their education, inspire me daily. As a councilor, I can witness firsthand their perseverance, resilience, and dedication, which makes recognizing their achievements through ASLHS especially meaningful.
Being able to celebrate their successes allows me to not only honor their hard work but also to create a sense of community and belonging for nontraditional students at our institution. It’s an opportunity to remind them—and the entire university community—that their paths, though different, are just as valuable and impactful. This role gives me the chance to uplift and support these students, ensuring they feel seen, appreciated, and connected to a network that celebrates their accomplishments.”
We’re so grateful for Melissa’s leadership and anticipate many more lives to be impacted by her passion.
