Chapter Councilor Highlight: Risa Cohn at Plaza College

Continuing our blog series to highlight several of our phenomenal Chapter Councilors across the country, this month’s feature showcases Risa Cohn, ASLHS Chapter Councilor for the Pi Chi Chapter at Plaza College in New York.

When asked, “What does the role of Chapter Councilor mean to you?” Risa shared…

Serving as Councilor at Plaza College for the last six years to students of the Alpha Sigma Lambda, Pi Chi Chapter, has been a deeply meaningful and heartfelt experience.

The majority of members are considered non-traditional college students, and have made a strong commitment returning to their academics and truly immersing themselves in the culture of the college community! Alpha Sigma Lambda has created a pathway for members to engage in various events, workshops, programs, and initiatives that support the growth of students academically and professionally.

When I reflect on the work I’ve done in this role, one of the most impactful experiences that comes up is working with the Honor Society Officers, who take on high level leadership roles in planning events that can be sponsored and supported by the chapter. In particular, Ms. Selina Ashley (showcased in the photo) has been an officer with me for the past two years, rising in the ranks from Vice President to President with much grace and excitement. Selina’s confidence and communication style has been strengthened. She works diligently to balance her academic and leadership responsibilities, while also working as a Peer Advisor Captain to students at Plaza College; a role that complements her Presidential characteristics beautifully.

The second most memorable experience as Chapter Councilor is the annual Honor Society Induction ceremony hosted every November. Students eligible for membership are invited to campus to participate in a celebration where a member of the Plaza College faculty leads the students in reading the Alpha Sigma Lambda oath!

All participants then receive an official certificate of membership and a pin as well. After the ceremony we host everyone for a celebration! We have refreshments and three photo walls (one consisting of the Alpha Sigma Lambda banner) for students to be photographed with their fellow peers, professors, and certificates! The students are encouraged to pursue an officer position as well given that new elections take place in December, and to add their membership to their resumes and LinkedIn profiles signifying this incredible academic achievement and milestone!

I very much look forward to working with the new inductees and officers on creating more initiatives and events for the chapter and entire Plaza College community for the 2024-25 academic year!

We’re so grateful to have dedicated Chapter Councilors like Risa, and look forward to seeing the Pi Chi Chapter at Plaza College thrive under her leadership.

Stay tuned for more highlights next month as we feature another leader for Alpha Sigma Lambda!
