This week, we are honored to feature Maureen Leahey from the University of Virginia: School of Continuing and Professional Studies, a esteemed recipient of the 2025-2026 ASLHS Scholarship award.
Maureen’s journey is a powerful reminder that perseverance and dedication can lead to extraordinary heights. As a rising fourth-year student, she has maintained outstanding academic achievement while actively supporting her community through roles as a Volunteer Student Mentor and a member of the UVA student-governed University Judiciary Committee. Outside of her studies, Maureen works full-time in a healthcare organization, where she is emerging as a leader and mentor, encouraging others to grow and succeed.
Balancing her education, career, and life as a single mother to her exceptional daughter Trinity, who occasionally joins her live classes via Zoom, Maureen embraces every challenge with a mindset rooted in growth and gratitude. Her story is one of unwavering strength and determination, inspiring those around her.
Maureen’s aspirations extend far beyond personal achievement. As a survivor of domestic violence, she is transforming her experience into a personal development book aimed at breaking stereotypes and encouraging others to embrace faith, healing, and resilience. Her higher calling is to inspire hope and lead change—whether through public speaking, publishing, or making a difference in healthcare leadership.
Her mentorship with her faculty advisor has sparked a desire to someday return to UVA as a professor, to give back and support future students in their journeys. Whatever the future holds—public speaking engagements, legislative advocacy, or innovative leadership—Maureen remains committed to creating a lasting legacy rooted in integrity, strength, and community betterment.
