Morgan State Honors Adult Scholars at 2025 Alpha Sigma Lambda Ceremony

Keynote speaker Natasha A. Lewis-Williams, M.Ed., and 24 outstanding adult learners celebrated in the Gamma Pi Chapter induction

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Morgan State University proudly celebrated the induction of 24 exceptional adult learners into the Gamma Pi Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. Hosted by the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS), the ceremony recognized the academic achievements, resilience, and leadership of nontraditional students who exemplify the values of lifelong learning.

The Gamma Pi Chapter—part of the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for adult and continuing education students—welcomed a new class of inductees representing 18 majors, with 12 students on track to graduate this May. Their collective accomplishments reflect Morgan’s commitment to supporting adult learners in pursuit of personal, academic, and professional growth.

Written remarks from Congressman Kweisi Mfume and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott honored the students’ perseverance and ability to balance the rigors of academic life with careers and family responsibilities.

The evening’s keynote address was delivered by Ms. Natasha A. Lewis-Williams, Associate Dean for Student Engagement, whose powerful and personal reflections on resilience and purpose struck a deep chord with attendees:

“As I reflected on my own journey, I shared three key points: Do it scared; keep the promise that you made to yourself; and keep your resilience at an all-time high,” said Lewis-Williams. “These are statements that I tell myself every day to stay on task to achieve my goals, and it has not let me down yet. It was so amazing to see these 24 students be inducted that evening—and surprisingly, I was awarded the same honor! Not only did I provide words of motivation, but I too was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, Gamma Pi Chapter. Such a privilege and honor to be recognized by this amazing group.”

In a surprise and heartfelt moment, Lewis-Williams was inducted as an honorary member of the Gamma Pi Chapter, a recognition of her unwavering support for student leadership and inclusive engagement.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came when Mr. Aaron Peterson, a 2019 Alpha Sigma Lambda inductee, returned to induct his wife, Zenamarie Peterson, into the same chapter. Aaron reflected on the significance of this full-circle experience:

“The night was nothing short of unforgettable. This was a moment etched in both purpose and love. As I stood there, I was reminded that greatness is not measured by titles or trophies, but by the lives we touch and the legacy we build through quiet resilience and bold examples. To accomplish great feats is a privilege, but to lead by example while doing so is a responsibility I do not take lightly. As members of Alpha Sigma Lambda, Gamma Pi Chapter at Morgan State University, we are not merely recognized for academic excellence—we are called to live it. Through unwavering service, integrity, and leadership, we carry forward a legacy that reaches beyond ourselves. We are expected to use our education to uplift, our stories to inspire, and our actions to transform the world around us. True leadership is when your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more.

Participating in the ritual that evening was deeply moving. There’s something sacred in that stillness. When ideals are spoken into the air and tradition embraces the next generation. In those moments, you don’t just witness legacy—you become part of it. But what made that night truly groundbreaking for me was the personal full-circle moment it held. In 2019, I stood in that very same position, being inducted, with my wife in the audience, cheering me on with love, pride, and unwavering support. And this time, I wasn’t just sitting in the audience for her induction—I was the one inducting her. I got to speak the words and welcome her into our family. There is nothing more powerful than pouring into the one who once poured into you.
That evening was a testament to everything this chapter stands for—not just excellence, but transformation. It was a moment where love met legacy, where leadership took on new meaning. And to my wife—what a full-circle moment it has been. What an honor it was to lead, to serve, and to share in this incredible night of light, legacy, and love with her.”

Zenamarie, who is majoring in Cybersecurity Intelligence Management, shared what the honor meant to her both personally and academically:

“From the moment I received my invitation email to join the Gamma Pi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment. It was an illuminating full-circle moment in my academic journey—proof that the long hours of studying, the late nights, and the unwavering commitment to my education were all worth it.

What made this moment even more meaningful was the personal connection, my husband. I remember how proud I was of him then. To now be invited to join the same chapter feels incredibly special. It’s a unique and heartwarming experience to follow in his footsteps and share in this prestigious recognition, even years apart.
This honor not only affirms my hard work but also highlights the continued support and motivation we’ve given each other throughout our academic pursuits. It’s a reminder that success is even sweeter when it’s shared with someone who understands the journey.”

The ceremony concluded with a reception where inductees celebrated alongside family, friends, and faculty. The event included professional headshots and reflections on the significance of the evening.

“This evening reminded me that I belong. That my story, my struggle, and my success matter.”
 — Tracy Blake, 2025 Inductee
