This month, we’re continuing our Chapter Councilor highlight series by featuring Nilajah Nyasuma Sims, Ed.D., Executive Director for Center for Continuing and Professional Studies at Morgan State University. Serving at the Chapter Councilor for Gamma Pi, Nilajah shares about the experience in her own words…
“Serving as an Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society (ASLHS) Chapter Councillor holds profound significance for me, both professionally and personally. I am deeply committed to empowering adult learners to succeed academically despite the unique challenges they face, such as balancing education with work, family, and other life commitments. This role enables me to actively support non-traditional students by recognizing their academic achievements and encouraging their perseverance.
When I became Chapter Councillor in 2012, Morgan State University’s Alpha Sigma Lambda chapter had recently been revived after a long hiatus. However, I noticed that no students from our institution had ever received scholarships from the national honor society. Determined to change this, I worked to understand the barriers preventing students from applying and provided guidance on writing and effectively reusing personal statements. As a result of these efforts, I am proud to share that for the first time, two Morgan State students were awarded Alpha Sigma Lambda scholarships this year. It has been incredibly rewarding to see these students thrive and reach significant milestones in their academic journeys, and Alpha Sigma Lambda provides Morgan State University with a national platform to celebrate and support their achievements.”
Thank you Nilajah for your faithful service to the adult learners at your institution. We know it is making a big impact!
