Join us in congratulating Sherlyn Ballestero Cruz – a recipient of the 2026-2027 Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship Award! As an active member of the Pi Upsilon Chapter at Park University in Parkville, Missouri, here is a sneak peek into Sherlyn’s journey:
A mindset that started at home
Sherlyn grew up in a home that taught her to chase her dreams with persistence. Her family had a saying that stuck with her: “If something doesn’t work, it’s because there’s still something in the logic that you don’t understand.”
She put that mindset to the test in seventh grade. Despite her fears, she chose to take the vocational school exams, and against many expectations, she passed. She calls it one of the most rewarding decisions of her life. It was also where she discovered her love for science and mathematics, which led her to study Computer Science at the University of Havana.
Pushing through the hard days
University brought real challenges. Sherlyn was away from her family, her father faced health problems, power outages were frequent, and the courses were tough. She often doubted herself, but she never gave up.
She learned to trust her own effort and held on to her father’s words: “My daughter, you are capable of anything; the day you understand that, you will be unstoppable.”
A fresh start
Before graduating, Sherlyn had the chance to come to the United States and start over in a new country, language, and culture. With the support of the Park University community, she is now closer than ever to earning her degree.
“The person I once was, afraid of not passing the vocational exams, would be so proud of how far I’ve come,” she says.
In her words
“I am deeply grateful to Alpha Sigma Lambda for this scholarship, which will help me continue my journey with even more strength.”
Congratulations, Sherlyn! Your journey shows what adult learners can achieve when they refuse to give up. We’re honored to support you on the next step.
