In her own words, here is a little glimpse into Jessica’s story:

This quote has become a daily affirmation for me as an immigrant, military spouse, and non-traditional student.

I was born and raised in South Africa and recently became a proud American citizen. Not long after, I started my college journey which happened to be in the middle of the pandemic, however, I managed to stay committed and determined to succeed. I am currently a junior in the B.F.A. program with a concentration in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. In addition to being a full-time student, I have actively taken on leadership roles during my time at UNC Charlotte by serving as an adult student ambassador for the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services (OASES). I also serve as a peer mentor with the University Center for Academic Excellence, providing academic support and guidance to my fellow peers.

I am particularly passionate about empowering underrepresented students and showing them that there is a place in this world for them. I aspire to guide students in turning their obstacles into opportunities for growth. I plan to apply for graduate school during my senior year to continue my education with an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Higher Education. This decision holds great significance for both myself and my family, as I am a first-generation student. I constantly strive to make the most of the wonderful privilege that I have of gaining higher education. I was honored to learn that I was selected as the recipient of the Dr. Sherman V.N. Kent Memorial Scholarship award. I cannot quite think of the perfect words to describe how much this opportunity means to me. I appreciate the efforts of the scholarship committee in evaluating my application and taking the time to learn about my academic journey.
